Introduction

I am a Japanese patient with atopic dermatitis (AD). I have suffered greatly from this disease. Moreover, the side effects of topical steroids have severely affected me. Additionally, I was extremely perplexed by confusing information. I have spent five years writing this book, drawing from my experiences, the lessons I learned from them, and my own investigations and insights about AD.

The latest prevailing theory on AD is as follows:

— AD patients originally have filaggrin gene mutations ⇒ Consequently, they experience issues with skin barrier function ⇒ Consequently, they become prone to percutaneous sensitization ⇒ Consequently, they develop AD.

However, I strongly disagree with this view, as I believe it is mistaken. In this book, I explain the true relationship between filaggrin gene mutations and AD.

In addition, I pursued the true causes by examining both “congenital disposition” and “acquired factors that trigger symptom development.”

This is a highly realistic analysis and discussion, based on observations of what is occurring in the bodies and minds of many patients, including myself, supported by scattered medical literature and information. The process has valued facts and objectivity.

The first thing I want to tell you is that AD is closely linked to Developmental Disorders and/or Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) traits.

Although AD is intractable, it is actually curable. That is why I believe it is necessary to first understand what this disease really is. I hope that not only patients and their families, but also medical experts will read this book.

This book does not describe or recommend any specific treatment. It is a book about the true causes (root causes, allergens, etc.) and mechanisms of AD. The purpose of this book is to help you learn about them and to help you think positively on your own about the following:

* How should you face this disease?
* Which of the existing treatment methods (e.g., drug therapy, folk remedies) make sense?

Furthermore, I sincerely hope that this book will also be read by medical experts and that it will help steer research into atopic dermatitis in the right direction, beyond vested interests and institutional ties, towards the establishment of truly appropriate treatment methods.
